Being green is the coolest thing you can be nowadays. But while some people care about the environment only because it’s the latest trend, for others it’s a lifestyle. Many families have cleared their homes off disposable utensils such as plates, cups, spoons, and forks, but when it comes to straws (especially for families with small children) it can be difficult to find a good substitute to plastic, disposable straws.
When we pick up a straw, it may not seem like much, but according to a recent report by Pamplin Media Group’s Earth Talk column, Americans use 500 million plastic straws A DAY.
"“…many of these straws find their way into our oceans, polluting underwater ecosystems and harming marine wildlife. Researchers warn that if we don’t clean up our act, there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish by 2050,” the source states. (Read more about what it can do to our Earth, here)"
Think about that. More plastic in the ocean than fish? That fact alone may make you think twice about using a straw (or buying a pack of straws for the house). But what can you do if you don’t want to give up straws? Really, even cutting back just a little bit helps a lot. However, if you’re all in and want to try reusable straws, there’s Eco at Heart!

The company recently sent a pack of stainless steel, reusable straws. Since receiving them, I’ve tried them with a variety of drinks such as iced coffee, smoothies, and yes, even orange juice. In fact, orange juice was the first drink I served myself to test the straws for that funky metal taste. Nothing! There’s no bad taste. The only big difference I noticed is that the straws become very cool, but that only helps keep your drinks colder longer, and with spring here and summer up next, this is a big plus.
Eco at Heart does warn not to use these reusable straws for hot liquids, so I didn’t even try it with that. Who wants a straw with hot coffee or hot chocolate anyway? This isn’t an issue.

Another thing that came to mind before receiving the straws is — how will they stay clean? Well, not only are they dishwasher safe, but they come with their own little brush.
The straws are available on Amazon in many designs — extra wide, bent straws, and more. Check out Eco at Heart online and on Instagram and Facebook.
