For cooks who love that sizzle, pork, mmm, a new flavor has their tastebuds watering. Korean BBQ SPAM joins the legendary line-up of flavors. Ready to give those classic recipes a bold flavor kick?

While the classic SPAM will always have a place in food lore, the company always looks for ways to excite cooks to reimagine the ingredient. Over the years, special limited time, seasonal flavors added warm spices, nods to holiday tales, and a variety of other flavor innovations.

As the 12th permanent flavor in the SPAM flavor family, Korean BBQ SPAM builds on the food’s connection to Korean cuisine. As Jennesa Kinscher, senior brand manager for the SPAM brand said, "SPAM Korean BBQ Flavored is a nod to the relationship the SPAM brand has to Korean food culture and the ongoing celebration of global tastes. This new variety not only satisfies the comfort and nostalgia our current fans crave, but it also attracts new fans who are eager to try the sweet and zesty flavors that the Korean BBQ dish and experience offers."

During a recent taste test, the newest flavor lived up to its description. Given that SPAM can be quite unctuous, the underlying umami notes help to add some flavor depth. While the garlic and soy stand out, it is the underlying gochujang note that helps to give some roundness to the food. Although some people might not choose to slice off a piece and enjoy it simply on bread, the Korean spices help to create a flavor foundation for many recipes.

To celebrate the product’s launch, SPAM enlisted the help of Ester Choi. The celebrated chef and restaurateur created several recipes showcasing the Korean BBQ flavor. While many people will appreciate the bowl recipe, a few other options highlight the nuances of the new SPAM flavor.

For example, the SPAM Korean BBQ Flavored Tacos are a great example. Some people might love a pork belly taco, but this recipe has more complexity. The tanginess from the kimchi helps to cut through the richness of the SPAM. Since the cubed SPAM is seared and glazed, the tangy sweetness with a hint of heat is quite enjoyable. Even though this idea is served as a taco, the concept could be served over some nachos, too.
