The RTD beverage category continues to grow. What started as a nod to convenience has become a staple on the shelf. From vodka sodas to riffs on classic cocktails, there is an option for every preference. With the rise of higher ABV options, these single sippers are meant to be savored for their bold flavors.

Beverage trends continuously evolve. One moment people are thirsty for just a simple spirit poured over a single cube. Then, the complicated tinctures, bitters and savory notes fill the glass. While many people choose to stay in their preferred lane, beverage brands are always looking to fill the glass with something new.

During a roundtable discussion with leaders from Total Wine and More, the team believes that RTDs, ready-to-drink cocktails, will continue to expand. Given that consumers crave convenience, companies are finding new ways to serve that satisfying sip. Resealable packaging and varying sizes all add to giving the consumers choice when it comes to opening that ready to drink option.

Recently, a particular category is starting to expand. The higher ABV RTDs are having a moment. Instead of sessionable sippers, these higher alcohol options feel more like a big cocktail’s punch versus an easy drinking alternative. Additionally, the flavor delivers what people want.

White Claw Surge was one of the first brands to embrace that 8% or more ABV. While it kept the brand’s signature carbonation and flavor, it was the beverage that made people be more mindful with their enjoyment. This option was not meant to be crushed.

Recently, two more RTDs joined the higher ABV category. Cayman Jacked pours a steep 10% ABV. Available in two flavors, Cayman Jacked Margarita and Cayman Jacked Strawberry Margarita, it feels like the sour cocktails, but it drinks a little lighter.

For example, the Cayman Jack slightly sweet margarita has a burst of lime brightness. Even for the person who prefers some salt or tajin on the glass, that serving choice can rim the can, too. Overall, this option is meant to be a full substitute for the classic cocktail.

The strawberry option is juicy and a touch tangy. It is nice to have a fruity option in the margarita space. When that beach breeze is too far off shore, this sipper can bring a wave of relaxation.

Another tart, yet refreshing, option is the Simply Spiked Bold. The 8% ABV beverage from Simply Spiked brings the big attitude to classic flavors. Available in Signature Lemonade and Cherry Limeade, the two flavors build on food trends like nostalgia and using real ingredients.

Simply Spiked always highlights its use of real fruit juice. Even though there is higher alcohol in this new Bold option, it never overshadows the fruit flavor. Every sip is juicy, tart and satisfying.

These specialty RTDs are perfect for a long, leisurely day sitting on the porch. Sometimes it is good to sit a spell and just let the day pass by.

With the next RTD grabbed, make sure to look cautiously before cracking the can. Not all canned cocktails are created equal. High ABV or a sessionable option, everyone can choose their preferred potent potable.
